Have you ever wanted to try to snowshoe or cross country ski but felt intimidated by all of the gear and the skill set needed? Well, be intimidated no more! January 12, 2013 is the 18th Annual Winter Trails Day, an introductory day of FREE snowshoeing and cross country skiing, complete with FREE equipment and FREE expert help to show you the skills you need to get started.

Organized by SnowSports Industries America (SIA), Winter Trails Day is celebrated at over 100 locations around the country, so there's bound to be a location near you.

So what are the perks of participating in a Winter Trails Day event? Plenty:

  1. Enjoy fun bonding time with family members of all ages while also working off all of those holiday meals with some moderate to vigorous exercise. (Did you know a 130-pound adult can burn up to 475 calories per hour with a moderate snowshoe or cross country skiing pace?)
  2. This is a risk-free chance to finally get out to play in fresh snow, the perfect opportunity at the perfect price--free!
  3. Outdoor exercise is a great way to shake off everyday stress and enjoy the beautiful winter landscape.
  4. Did we mention this is free??
