At the time, 1984, there were only a few of us involved in wild med, and here "involved" means it was a job. There were plenty of students, but we lacked books to support our teaching. I started writing them. The first two, Medicine for the Backcountry and Backcountry First Aid & Extended Care, are still in print. My most recent wild med book, Wilderness First Responder, was honored by the American Medical Writers Association with an award for excellence. I can't imagine a better life than what I've lived, more than two decades of teaching people to care for people.
